Why Build your own Headset?
In our never ending pursuit of the perfect helmet headset, we have
learned a great deal about how our speaker and microphone components
perform in the motorcycle riding environment.
It has gotten a bit more complicated then we might like, but by
offering multiple speaker and microphone choices, we can respond
to the various types of helmets being used and customer preferences
concerning overall headset performance.
Which Helmet Speakers are right for me?
You should first decide if you put a greater priority on music
or voice communications.
That is not to say that our voice component speaker will not produce
good quality music from your audio system because it will, it is
just that it's frequency response is slightly narrower and therefore
it favors the frequency range of the human voice.
Many riders prefer to listen to the music thru the fairing mounted
speakers and use the helmet headsets only for driver/passenger and/or
CB communications. If this sounds like you then you should choose
the # HSCP-VS30 speakers (1 per package) regardless of your helmet
type, including all shorty style helmets with zip-on lower skirts
that have been designed to accept helmet speakers.
Our ported (DynaPort®) and non-ported wide fidelity helmet
speakers will produce the broadest frequency range available, from
deep bass response to crisp clear highs for your listening enjoyment,
but the quality of the sound you actually hear will depend a great
deal upon the acoustical characteristics of the particular helmet
they are installed into and the quality of that installation.
You should choose the DynaPort speakers, # HSCP-DS10 (1 per package)
if the design of the helmet's interior ear pocket is large and deep
with a seam for placement of the DynaPort tube, similar to what
you will find in the Arai, Shoei, HJC and Vega open face and the
Nolan N100E flip-front style helmets.
You should choose the non-ported speakers, # HSCP-SS20 for those
ear pocket/cheek pad configurations that are flat and in most cases
removable, so that you can build the speaker into the check pad
or full face style nose section from the rear and preserve the bass
response by correctly sealing the speaker into the styrene.
Examples of this type of installation can be found in the Shoei
Syncrotec flip-front and the Arai, Shoei and HJC full face style
helmets.
Which Microphone should I use ?
The AeroMike® III miniature boom microphone is the quietest
helmet mike J&M has ever made.
They are available in three different lengths to accommodate the
various types and styles of motorcycle helmets.
Choose the medium length component boom mike # HSCP-BM30 for most
open face and flip-front style helmets.
The full face type helmet presents special challenges for microphone
installation.
The shortest length mini boom installed in the full face style
helmet, part# HSCP-BM25 will provide the greatest amount of wind
and ambient noise canceling available, but not all riders will have
enough clearance in the front of the helmet to place the boom mike
in front of their mouth without it becoming uncomfortable.
For those installations, especially when the helmet will be used
in the driver position behind a large fairing or windshield, you
may choose the flush mounted chin bar microphone part # HSCP-FM40.
Choose the longest AeroMike III miniature boom microphone part
# HSCP-BM35 to mount on the shorty style helmets.
Clamp-on Electrical Connection Socket or Clampless ?
Certainly the new clampless type is preferred, but most motorcycle
helmets will not yet accept this type of electrical socket installation,
so you would normally choose clamp component part # HSCP-UC50.
The special circuitry that is built into this clamp assembly will
allow your headset to be connected to any factory installed motorcycle
audio system today, just by interchanging the lower section hook-up
cord (hook-up cords are NOT included with this component clamp assembly).
J&M is the only brand of helmet headset to provide this multi-system
flexibility.
Hook-up Cord Selections.
To complete your headset choose the upper section hook-up cord,
part # HC-AAL along with the lower section hook-up cord that corresponds
to your particular audio system.
